Exotic Pet Care
Few veterinary practices can boast the diversity of patients we treat at Animal Medical Center.
What is Exotic Pet Care?
Exotic pet care involves specialized veterinary services tailored to species with unique anatomy, behavior, environmental requirements, and medical needs. Unlike traditional dogs and cats, exotic animals often require advanced handling techniques, specialized diagnostics, and a deeper understanding of species-specific health concerns.
At Animal Medical Center, we provide individualized care for a wide variety of exotic pets, including reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, sugar gliders, kangaroos, wallabies, and more. From routine wellness care and nutritional guidance to surgery and advanced diagnostics, our team is equipped to help exotic pets receive the same high standard of care as any other patient.
The same services we offer for large animals and small companion animals are also available for exotics. In fact, the technology and facilities at Animal Medical Center are especially well-suited for the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of exotic species.
Comprehensive Care for Exotic Animals
Experienced Exotic Animal Medicine
Just how experienced are we with exotic animals at Animal Medical Center? For starters, Dr. Gilsleider pioneered corrective leg surgeries for ostriches and emus and has taught these techniques both in the United States and abroad. He also served as the veterinarian on call for circus animals after providing care for animals with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey.
From carnivores and mice to rhinos and elephants, there are very few exotic species too small—or too large—for our team to handle.
Surgical & Therapeutic Services
Our team utilizes advanced surgical technology, including laser and ultrasonic scalpel surgery, to help reduce pain, swelling, and bleeding during procedures. We also offer pet laser surgery and pet cold laser therapy to support healing and comfort during recovery.
On-Site & Farm Visits
For animals that cannot easily be transported, Animal Medical Center also offers on-site veterinary visits and farm calls when appropriate.
Wellness Exams & Preventative Care
Routine pet wellness exams are especially important for exotic species, as many illnesses can progress quickly without obvious signs. We provide health evaluations, husbandry guidance, nutritional counseling, and preventative recommendations tailored to each species.
Advanced Diagnostics
Animal Medical Center offers digital radiography, diagnostic ultrasonography, and in-house laboratory testing for exotic pets. These advanced diagnostic tools help us quickly and accurately evaluate health concerns.
For reptiles, birds, and small mammals, early diagnostic screening can be especially valuable because exotic animals often hide signs of illness until conditions become more advanced.
Anesthesia & Monitoring
Exotic species often require specialized anesthesia protocols and careful monitoring. During surgery, Dr. Gilsleider closely monitors respiratory, cardiac, and pulse oximetry levels to maximize patient safety.
Why Exotic Veterinary Care Matters
Early Detection Is Critical
Many exotic pets instinctively hide signs of illness, making regular veterinary visits essential for identifying health problems early.
Specialized Knowledge Matters
Improper diet, habitat setup, temperature control, or handling can quickly lead to serious health issues in reptiles, birds, and small mammals.
Advanced Equipment Improves Outcomes
Specialized diagnostics such as ultrasound, digital radiography, and laboratory testing allow for more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Proper Veterinary Care Supports Quality of Life
Routine care, nutritional guidance, and preventative medicine can help exotic pets live healthier, more comfortable lives.
